Third Anniversary Announcement: This August, ICA will turn 3 years old!! We are so proud of reaching this milestone, and incredibly thankful to each one of you that has helped ICA grow into the community it is today. For our Grand Opening and  first 2 anniversaries, we celebrated by hosting the 31 Heroes fundraiser. This year, we are opening it up to YOU, our members, to pick the fundraiser! If you have a cause that is near and dear to you, please post it to comments or send us an email by June 15, along with a short explanation of why that particular cause is important to you. If your cause already has a CrossFit WOD associated it with we’ll do our best to use the specified WOD. If not, we’ll make one up! The coaches will pick our favorite few causes/organizations, then open it up for a gym-wide vote. (31 Heroes is guaranteed to have a spot on the ballot.) We hope this will become a new tradition, so each year we can support a new and deserving cause and help give back to the organizations our members truly care about!

Outdoor Trail Running WOD you say? Oh boy. I’ll be there with bells on.

I guess I’ll start off with the charity ideas. It would be neat to raise money for the non-profit that shares our building with us – Fellowship HR. (https://www.fellowshiphr.org/donate). I have no personal ties to the organization, but it would be nice to support a neighbor! What other ideas are out there?

Mike and I would like to suggest ALS charity. Mike’s father passed away from this and it is one that we like to keep continuing to contribute to find a cure!

In my experience and opinion, one of the most highly regarded, active and effective charitable organizations in the area is Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS).

    Check out their services.

Being that I worked closely with Fellowship at my last job- I would not give money to that organization. We had several problems with consumers as well as with employees there. If mental health is an organization that there I me interest in raising money for, I can give you all plenty of other organizations that are wonderful and really help the consumers receiving assistance.

What about the SPCA or a rescue called Noah’s Ark who takes in some of the worst animal cruelty cases ever and never turns animals away!! They are amazing!

    1. Nikki

Thanks Linds! (For the info on Rellowship and these other suggestions!)

My suggestion for a charity to fund raise for is Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. http://www.alexslemonade.org It is a local organization started by Alexandra Scott as a lemonade stand to help raise funds for children with Pediatric Cancer, at first it was to help her parents pay her medical bills. Her first stand was at age 4. She passed away at the age of 8 from cancer but to date the foundation she has started has raised over $80 million toward finding a cure. The best part I’ve found out is somewhere in the neighborhood of 85-90% of all funds go to the cause (you’d be surprised how many charities have a very high “overhead rate”.) I’ve done multiple fundraisers for them the past few years as part of Team Lemon and it is an amazing feeling. I could go on and on but that will be my pitch.

Some of you know of my passion for animals (I have bothered many of you to adopt a foster from me).. I think this is a great one!:

August 23, 2014 will mark the 2nd annual WOD for Dogs in honor of Wallace the Pit Bull. To check out his story, go to the link below. Proceeds will go to Wallace the Pit Bull Foundation and they will split the funds each gym raises at their event with a local organization of our choice!

I would love it if we could donate to ACCT (Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia). They are a very high kill shelter and could really use the funds!

    2. Dave

Both of our little monsters came straight from the city streets via ACCT. best two choices of our life. Well…debatable, but up there.

  7. Laurie

I’d also be in favor of donating money to an animal shelter, especially to a NO KILL one. These organizations are often called on by the larger shelters when they run out of room and are most often the last chance some animals have.

  8. Laurie

YAY, I’m excited to host my ICA friends in MY neighborhood, Valley Forge Park. Can’t wait!

  9. James

I’m voting for an animal rescue, and I think the shelters that euthanize are just as worthy as the ones that don’t.

  10. James

Or maybe we could try to start passing a pot around to get Craig counseling to help him get over his crippling fear of the gym in general and being beaten by me in particular

    1. Dave

Now I am ALL FOR THAT!

During the longest wars in America’s history, less than 1% of Americans have been on active duty at any given time. Yet they have sacrificed everything while we were safe at home. Given the state of veteran’s healthcare and so many returning home injured or leaving families behind, these men and women deserve the best we can give.

    1. B

I’m with you on this Kev, how we treat our returning soldiers is the true test of morality for our country. “People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf”. This is a good one too http://www.cfsrf.org

  12. Anna

I am partial towards any charities supporting veterans and man’s (and women’s) best friend! Having a brother who is a Kosovo war veteran, I’ve seen firsthand the personal struggles that a war veteran goes through and any support will be worth it. And Kim- your work with animals is amazing, so ACCT would be a great choice as well.

    1. Kim D.

      Thanks Anna!

  13. McGonigal

Lots of great suggestions for charities. Looking forward to celebrating 3 years and being part of a good cause.

If anyone is thinking about the KOP comp in July, I’d be up for being on a team.

  14. Kathy

An outdoor, potentially hiking, WOD and I will be away…. 🙁 ….you must do another one 🙂

  15. Nadine

You guys are such caring folks. I love being a part of this gym!
